Submitted by an officer with the U.S. foreign commercial service
I was stationed in Mexico City for a few years a while back. Our offices there were in the building that houses the Benjamin Franklin Library, which is a few blocks away from the U.S. Embassy.
The staff used to tell stories that the building was haunted, saying people heard strange sounds or felt a presence, but I am not really a believer so I laughed it off… until it happened to me.
Back when I was single, I would frequently work late at the office. One night I heard heavy footsteps in the hallway. I assumed it was the guard because it sounded like boots. I was already getting up to get something from the printer, so I looked around only to realize nobody was there. I looked around the corner, still nobody.
So I went downstairs and found the guard sitting at the front desk. I asked him if he was just doing rounds and he said not. I asked if anyone else was in the building and again he said no. I told him what had happened and he got a knowing look on his face and wasn’t even a little bit surprised. He had heard reports like this before.
On another late night (yes, I kept working late) I was really deep into finishing up a report but somewhere down the hall I heard someone typing in one of the cubicles. It was really fast typing but definitely keyboard typing. I made a mental note to go see who else was working late.
A bit later I heard it again, but this time it caught my attention because it wasn’t a normal typing rhythm, it sounded more like someone playing on the keyboard just to make noises. This made me curious enough to go see who it was.
I walked down the entire row of cubicles… there was nobody there but me, I grabbed my purse and got the hell outta there!
When I shared these stories with other staff, I learned that a LOT of folks had shared stories over the years.
It makes you wonder if that should be highlighted in the overseas posting?
