This story took place when my husband and I first joined the Foreign Service. The Foreign Service assigns you housing when you go overseas, and ours seemed to already be occupied…
We were stationed in the Mexican border town of Matamoros. I think there were ghosts all over that town…
But in our house in particular my husband and I both constantly heard a baby crying in the house. Granted, we had two small children and then had a baby while living there, but I’d hear the crying, check on the kids, and they’d be sleeping soundly. It wasn’t a baby monitor picking up another house, either, because we took out the batteries and could still hear crying.
My 19-month-old daughter frequently would “talk” to someone that wasn’t there. I’d hear her baby gabbing, walk into her room, and she’d be focused on something very specific in the room that she saw but I did not.
One night, I was rocking with my newborn and saw something move inside my son’s room across the hall.
Granted, I was a sleep-deprived mother of three young children, but I watched it glide across the open doorway. I sat there for a few minutes thinking if my son didn’t scream, then it must not be a bad spirit. And for what it’s worth, even when I felt like there was something in the house (on the second floor only, never anywhere else), I didn’t feel like there was anything bad there.
Fast forward a few months. I made an off-handed comment to one of the local staff about our house being haunted. Haha, right? Nope.
She gets very serious and tells me not to tell anyone else. Previous occupants of our house had asked to move because of the ghost, and if other homeowners complained she was afraid local staff would refuse to go to the house for repairs and other annual service/checkups.
The house stayed in the housing pool for at least one more family that moved in after us. I don’t know if it still is in the housing pool, though.
