I served a tour in Haiti, but it was one of those places that simply felt unsettling. Haiti’s official religion is voodoo. They actively practice it and keep pathways open and communicate with the spirit world. It would make sense that an island with such a bloody history of conflict and slavery would have ghosts and unhappy spirits.
I never felt comfortable there. It has nothing to do with the poverty which is of course everywhere. But it was a feeling. To me, it was a very dark place.
While stationed there, I lived in the embassy housing compound called Cane au Sucre. Sugar Cane. Used to be the land of a rum distillery. Slave labor. Weird stuff happened on that compound.
They were heavily built concrete houses, 38 single family homes on the compound though I lived alone. Thick concrete walls, tile floors. I was one night upstairs reading in bed and my two cats were with me. I suddenly heard one of my wooden dining room chairs being slid across the floor downstairs. Like a dragging sound but I knew what it was right away.
There was no one else in the house and the cats heard it too. One jumped up and went downstairs to look down the staircase but did not go down. No way I was either. In the morning the chairs were back around the table but one was eschewed. Enough that I knew which one had moved.
Another time was a very hot and quiet Sunday afternoon around 4:00 and I was returning from grocery shopping. I pulled into the car port and opened up the hatch to get the bags. I heard a little girl’s voice say a bright and distinct “Hello” and out of the corner of my eye I saw a flip of white material, like a little girl’s white dress, around the big carport pillar.
I thought it was one of the many little girls on the compound playing so I said “hi” back and asked her if she would carry a bag in for me. I was planning on giving her a cookie or something. I walked around the pillar and of course no one was there. I looked around the street and of course no one. I got instant chills. Those are kind of the two benign experiences.
