About ten years ago we were stationed in Stuttgart, Germany. We moved there in mid-November which is a terrible time to find a rental, especially in the tight market around the EUCOM military base where my husband was working.
We saw a house in Degerloch, a suburb right on the transit line, and while the house had a somewhat creepy vibe from the get go, it was really all that was available for a family of five and we were running out of days we could keep living in the hotel so we signed the lease.
Weird things started happening pretty much from the day we moved into that house. For starters, the landlord was really weird about stuff. He had promised that he would remodel the kitchen which was super old, and made us wait to move in so he could do it. When we got the keys, he not only hadn’t remodeled but he clearly hadn’t set foot in the place as dust had accumulated and it seemed darker and creepier than I remember.
It was a tall, four level house. In the basement was a sauna, which was my husband’s dream feature in the house, as he would normally use a sauna every day if he could. Although he told me the house’s creepiness was in my imagination, even he couldn’t pretend that the basement was okay. He only used the sauna once and never went down there again. I actually used to take my laundry out rather than go down there, it was that bad.
I frequently heard banging in the kitchen when I was home alone. I would run into the room, almost hoping to see something fly across the room just to confirm I wasn’t crazy hearing things. But it was only noises… at first.
Our guest bathroom was the only one on the main floor of the house. It was in our stairwell. Behind the toilet there was a deep shelf that went to a tinted window where I had placed a fake orchid. At the front of the bathroom was a shelf with stacked hand towels. It was a fairly large room and about 8 feet separated the shelf with the orchid from the towels.
Moving plants
One day after running errands I came home to find the orchid upside down in the trash can with the towels set on top of it, neatly folded. At first I told myself the cats must have knocked it down, but this would have been physically impossible. The orchids would have had to fly across the toilet, four feet and land in the trash, and then there was still no explanation for the towels. I wondered if the landlord had entered for some reason while I was out. My husband thought it was my imagination and things must not have been placed where they were.
A horrific discovery
The next day I was home alone, upstairs, and I heard the banging in the kitchen again. Frustrated, wondering if there were some pipes I hadn’t seen that might be making noises, I climbed on a step ladder to look over the cabinets. That’s when I saw it.
Bizarrely taped to the corner between the ceiling and the wall was a small vial of liquid. I ripped it off and looked at it, there was dark red liquid inside this vial that was about the size of a perfume sample bottle. Yes, it looked like blood.
I walked into the living room where there was sun streaming in the windows and realized there was another vial taped to the edge of the ceiling there. I slowly went room by room, the dining room, an office, three bedrooms, the bathroom we use upstairs, they all had vials of this red liquid taped to the ceiling, sometimes more than one. I collected twelve total. I was completely freaked out.
I called my husband at work and made him come home for lunch. He tried to stay calm but he was pretty rattled and stopped trying to say everything is okay. That’s when I looked at the guest bathroom and saw the orchid upside down in the trash again with the towels neatly folded on top. I pointed at it and he just looked at me and said “okay, we’ll move.” It was expensive, but there was no way I was spending three years in that house.
We spent the next couple of months traveling as much as possible and moved out in the spring. When we told the landlord we were leaving he didn’t even seem surprised. I have no idea what happened in that house, but it wasn’t good. We never did get to the bottom of what was in those vials and why they were taped in every room.
