As submitted by an aid worker stationed in Haiti
Haiti can be a spooky country in a lot of ways. While I was stationed in the country, I took a break to go with two other families up in the hills to a farm where USAID funds some projects and it is safe to camp.
My friends had kids so when they put them to bed one of the moms sung to them. I put up my tent a little bit away from the others, around the front of a building, so I would not bother them if I got up in the night to use the bathroom or something.
Early the next morning, like around 5:00, while It was still dark, I heard several women singing nearby. But it was not in English, french or kryole as I recognize those languages. At first I thought it was my friend again but it was more than one woman and more than the two that were my female friends.
I sat up and when I did so the singing stopped immediately. I then heard a heavy, and very loud, non-human, breathing right outside my tent. It only happened a few times and no, I sure as sh*t did not go outside!
When I finally emerged it was at dawn and my friend’s husband was outside making a coffee and I asked him if his wife had been singing that morning and he was like no, she and the kids were all still asleep. He had heard nothing and had been up for a while.
