My grandmother had shoulder surgery when she was 49. She died on the table for a few minutes before the medical team brought her back, but she was never quite the same after that.
She told me at the time she had been visited by someone she referred to as “The Comforter”. I was 9 years old then and it stuck with me.
After she came back she used to stare into reflective things. I remember her once putting away canned goods. She was staring into the top of one. I asked her what she was doing. She just looked up at me and put the can inside the cabinet.
One day she suddenly covered all the mirrors in her house. My grandfather had built the house for her and they had always lived there. She told us that there was a little boy in the mirrors when she looked into them. She said he was sneering and laughing at her.
A few months later my grandmother went to the home of their pastor while my grandfather was at the store across the street. She told him about the things she had been seeing and said she couldn’t take it anymore. Before anyone could stop her, she pulled out a gun and shot herself.
My grandfather ran to her and picked her up and held her. She tried to speak but was unable to and passed over in his arms.
That was when I was in fourth grade.
My grandfather sold the house and moved. A man who is a locksmith bought the house. He and his wife and little boy live there.
Years passed and I decided to have the locks of my house rekeyed so that all the locks would only have one key. I dropped by the old house because I knew the owner was a locksmith and talked to him. I told him my grandfather had built the house for my grandmother in 1969.
He asked me if they had a boy and I said no, three girls. He asked about the history of the house so I reluctantly told him the story. I explained we thought my grandmother had brain damage from the surgery incident.
Then I told him the effects of the supposed brain damage was that she was seeing a little boy in all the mirrors. He all of the sudden stepped back and became very angry.
“What did you just say?!?” he said, seeming shocked.
I repeated it.
He said his son was terrified as a child because he kept seeing a boy in the mirrors. He said they had to get him counseling for it and begged me to never tell his son if I ever spoke to him,
He came to my house the next day and re-keyed my locks without making much eye contact and no mention of our conversation at all.
So my question remains, what is in the mirrors and how did it get there?
